Last year, 20-year-old member of Laborers Local 41, Jacob Catizone called Hospice of the Calumet Area (HCA) and introduced himself with a sense of poise and charisma well beyond his years. Jacob shared how inspired the Laborers 41 Union were with our mission, and as our neighbor, they wanted to find a way to support our work.

In its debut year, Hot Rods 4 Hospice 2024, seventeen classic and custom cars filled the parking lot, and the event raised over $1,000. Jacob was a bit disappointed by the turnout, but torrential rains that morning had understandably kept collectors away.

Fast forward to 2025 and what a difference. Seventy five cars filled Laborers 41’s parking lot, pushing the event

to capacity raising over twice as much. There was

a different energy in the air, which included great enthusiasm, purpose, and a genuine sense of community. Show participants began sharing ideas on expanding and improving the show next year.

Laborers 41 raised over $2,200 this year and they introduced a whole new audience to the compassionate mission of Hospice of the Calumet Area. Groups of friends came out, new faces joined the show, and even HCA’s Admission RN Sarah Cross showcased her sleek Dodge Charger.

“I was a bit reluctant because I didn’t think my car was in the same category as many of the others,” said Cross. “But I’m glad I participated. It was fun with a positive vibe, everyone was welcoming and in full support of our Cherishing Life mission.”

The winner of Best in Show was a stunning 1967 Chevy Nova owned by Andy Graziano, a lifelong car enthusiast. Turns out, Graziano’s support for hospice reached beyond the car show as his family volunteered by singing Christmas carols to patients at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence a few years ago.

“Hospice does wonderful work, and I’m glad we could support their commitment to patients and families,” Graziano shared. “I was impressed with this show, and I brought some friends who were also very complimentary. We’ll definitely be back.”

Thanks to the leadership of Jacob Catizone and Donnie Roach, the Laborers 41, and the enthusiasm of participants, Hot Rods 4 Hospice has become a powerful vehicle, both literally and figuratively, for raising awareness and support for HCA.
