Dedication

The mission of hospice care is usually focused at the opposite life cycle of pediatric care.  Yet, the goal of both is remarkably similar:  to deliver compassionate and quality care framed in the needs of the patient and the family.  It is in this universal spirit of helping and serving that this book is dedicated.

Preface

I started writing a weekly column, Your Child’s Health, for The Times of Northwest Indiana in the Fall of 2000.  Since its inception, many topics have been covered.  The scope of pediatrics is broad and this has been reflected in the range of topics I have presented.  Yet, the goals of this column have remained unchanged:  to be informative, to be practical and to be an advocate for the child.

This book is a compilation of selected columns that I have written for my health column.  All proceeds from this book will be donated to a most worthwhile local charitable institution, Hospice of the Calumet Area.  I have had both personal and professional experience with hospice care, and have been in awe of their many good works and good deeds.  Therefore, I am gratified that this book reaches beyond the child, touching the lives of the entire family at a time of crisis.  Thank you, Hospice of the Calumet Area, for the privilege of being associated with you.
